Write Out of the Margins! December
2001

FREE!

StreetWrites is a group of homeless and formerly homeless people who help each other improve our writing, get published more, increase the voice of marginalized people, and break stereotypes. We meet at Real Change, 2129 Second Avenue, where we have writing workshops every Tuesday and Thursday, 7 PM to 10 PM, desktop publishing class on Saturdays from 4 PM to 6 PM, and an Open Mic every Sunday from 1 PM to 4 PM. We also have an online email list, forum, and webpage.

 Winter Bird  Winter Tree  African Woman

December and January mean many different things to different people. Celebrations: Christmas, Ramadan, Channukah, Kwanzaa, Winter Solstice, New Year's Day. Misery: stress of shopping; stress of not being able to shop; stress from the family; stress from being separated from family; stress from the weather; stress from being out in the weather. As the writer Spider Robinson says, "Shared joy is increased; shared sorrow is decreased." Let us share both...

She scoops up the ingredients
For her sundae face:

Eyes cream (vanilla)
With plum topping;
And raspberries on her lips.
