One Woman
    by Anitra L. Freeman

    The world only needs
       one woman.

    Don't you, don't I,
       have more faces than anyone's
         ever seen?
    My feet have danced
       dragged
         stomped
           been
    a hundred thousand feet.

    I have heard my name sung
       to a woman I've never been
         anywhere near.
    I have felt my child in my arms
       cuddle
         shrink
         go stiff
    and wondered what he saw
       where I held my face.

    Men who pummel demons
       in any lover's flesh;
    children who curse nightmares
       in any mother's face;

    who needs any more
       than one woman?
